A University of Georgia senior is awake and talking after falling eight stories from an apartment window while dancing on a couch. Kristin Sargent, 21, landed on the pool deck of her Athens building late Saturday night and survived. Athens-Clarke County police say the early investigation points to a freak accident, nothing more.
The fall happened shortly before 8 p.m. at Rambler Athens, a luxury student complex at 558 West Broad Street near the UGA campus, according to NBC News reporting. Police say Sargent was dancing on a couch near an open window when she lost her balance and dropped through the screen. The 5-foot-7 finance and marketing major fell roughly 80 feet to the courtyard below.
Sergeant Erik Ellison’s incident report lays out what first responders found. The victim was lying near the pool, which sits in a second-floor courtyard, and the scene suggested she struck a metal bench on the way down. The bench cushion had blood on it. The armrest had snapped clean off. Investigators believe that cushioned impact may have broken the worst of the fall.
“At this time, she is conscious and alert but seriously injured,” Athens-Clarke County police said in a statement. Ellison wrote that the probe thus far suggests the incident was an accident and that the victim will survive. Sargent was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she has been treated in intensive care for several broken bones.
Her father, Richard Sargent, made the drive from Virginia and spoke with Atlanta’s Channel 2 Action News about the phone call no parent wants. “She was talking to one of her friends and saying, ‘Hey, I’m alive. I can’t believe it,'” he told the station. “She’s a good fighter, and so she’s going to be OK.” He noted the fall came on a celebratory night in Athens, just after the Bulldogs routed Oklahoma 41 to 13. “I bet there were a lot of kids here who were 21 years old who were super happy,” he said.
The building’s owners have said little beyond a short statement. “Our thoughts are with the resident and their family. We are grateful to learn they are receiving treatment. We are continuing to gather information and review the circumstances surrounding what occurred,” a Rambler Athens spokesperson told FOX 5 Atlanta.
Management also emailed residents after the fall, reminding them that windows throughout the complex carry safety limiters and asking tenants not to tamper with, remove or disengage the devices, the New York Post reported. It remains unclear whether the window Sargent fell from had a limiter engaged, or what role it played. Building codes generally require fall prevention devices on operable windows with low sills in multifamily high-rises.
Rambler Athens opened in August 2024, part of a wave of upscale student towers ringing the UGA campus. The eight-story, roughly 344-unit building holds about 750 beds. On Monday, friends and classmates filled a poster board in the lobby with dozens of handwritten well wishes for the senior everyone is calling lucky. Her family has kept further details of her condition private while she recovers.
