Darren Watkins Jr., the 21-year-old Cincinnati native known as IShowSpeed, walked away with minor cuts after a balloon stunt celebrating 60 million YouTube subscribers went sideways during a livestream Friday.
Watkins, born Jan. 21, 2005, in Cincinnati and raised in the Bond Hill neighborhood, has spent the better part of a decade turning chaotic energy into one of the biggest audiences in online entertainment. He started posting on YouTube in 2016 and broke out around 2021 with clips of his over-the-top reactions. By Friday afternoon the counter finally tipped past 60 million.
For the occasion he and his team staged a lift modeled after the Disney movie “Up.” With about 200,000 subscribers still needed, they planned to add one balloon for every 10,000 new followers, later swapping in larger helium balloons. Watkins told viewers a professional stunt crew and a medic were standing by.
“I appreciate you all so much bro,”
he said just before the attempt. He wanted to hit the number while already floating.
Crew members held his legs at first as the chair began to rise. Once the counter flipped to 60 million, Watkins grew emotional and asked to be let go completely. Moments later several balloons burst. The rigging gave way and he dropped hard to the ground.
Livestream footage captured the landing. Blood showed on his forehead. He breathed heavily and lay still long enough that people watching, and his own team, grew alarmed. Then he sat up, yelled about the 60 million mark, shouted his usual “Green Apples,” and lay back down again.
The stream switched between camera angles of the fall. Clips moved fast across social media. Some viewers wondered if it had been staged. Most simply sounded relieved he was moving.
Later Watkins posted an Instagram Story while standing near emergency personnel. He held up a cut on his forehead and a scraped, bleeding finger.
“I am okay, alright. I am okay. It was crazy. Thank you all so much for 60 million bro, love ya’ll,”
he said. In another update he added,
“I’m okay y’all.”
Medics checked him on site. No serious injuries were reported. The fall fits a pattern of physical milestone celebrations that occasionally leave Watkins scraped or bruised. In 2025 he dove head-first into his setup after hitting 40 million subscribers and came up bleeding.
Reports did not specify the exact location of Friday’s stream. Watkins has been expanding his content setup, including the recent purchase of a warehouse near West Little River in the Miami area that he plans to turn into a new studio.
Watkins holds dual U.S. and Ghanaian citizenship. He attended Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy and Purcell Marian High School before finishing online. His father, Darren Watkins Sr., and younger siblings have appeared on YouTube; his mother, Tiffany Elizabeth Graves, raised him after his parents’ divorce. He is known for loud, unpredictable streams, an obsessive love of Cristiano Ronaldo, music releases, and long international travel tours that have fueled much of his recent growth.
The balloon stunt was one of the bigger risks he has taken for a subscriber milestone. Even after the drop, Watkins used the moment to thank the audience that got him there.
